FROM USM TO GLOBAL STAGE: PROFESSOR JAFRI NOW ACADEMY OF SCIENCES MALAYSIA'S SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP BRAIN ECONOMY ADVISOR
USM, KUBANG KERIAN, KELANTAN, 27 March 2026 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) continues to make its mark globally as its distinguished neuroscientist, Professor Dato’ Dr. Jafri Malin Abdullah, has been appointed as Advisor for the Special Interest Group (SIG) Position Paper on the Brain Economy for Malaysia by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia.

This appointment recognises his expertise and significant contributions in neuroscience, particularly in advancing the link between brain health, societal well-being and economic as well as capital development.
He will serve in this role until 28 February 2027, providing strategic insights for the development of Malaysia’s Brain Economy policy paper.

A leading neurosurgeon and translational scientist, Professor Jafri is widely recognised as a pioneer in neuroscience development in Malaysia and the founding figure of the Brain and Behaviour Cluster at Hospital Pakar USM.
His appointment also aligns with his active involvement in global Brain Economy initiatives, including engagements with the Global Brain Economy Council.
This achievement further strengthens USM’s position as a leading institution in health sciences and impactful research on the global stage.
