USM, KUBANG KERIAN, KELANTAN, 3 May 2023 – An estimated 10 tons of fabric-based recyclable items such as old clothes, curtains, fabric scraps, carpets, bags, shoes and toys were successfully collected through the Clothing Recycling Programme that had been organised by the Health Campus Sustainability Committee, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) on the 16th and 17th of April, 2023.
This collection, contributed by USM residents and the general public, was handed over to Life Line Clothing Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. ,the collaboration partner who has made the ‘Up Cycle 4 Better’ (U4B) project a success. This project aims to prevent the collected materials from being dumped in landfills and to give them a new lease of life instead.
As an effort to create positive values, clothes and items that are still in good condition will be set aside for reclaiming purposes by utilising the concepts of repairing, sharing and reusing.
This programme received an extraordinary response with a total number of 151 participations. These comprised the contributing residents of Health Campus and also individuals of the general public.
The efforts of the Health Campus Sustainability Committee in implementing this programme, which was led by Wan Emilin W. Mat Ali, are seen as a supportive endeavour in the ongoing struggles to reduce the rise of global temperatures. These efforts could help to prevent carbon emissions produced by landfills and waste incineration. Otherwise, the burning of these unwanted items would affect human health with its production of toxic and poisonous gases.
